Georgia Selected as “Race to the Top” Finalist – WABE

Governor Sonny Perdue is excited after learning the state is still being considered for 400 million dollars in “Race for the Top” grant money.

In a statement the Governor says, “Like the Oscars it is an honor to be nominated” as one on nineteen states in the second round of the education grant program. Perdue went on to say, “We look forward to celebrating a win in this race.”

According to spokesman Bert Brantley, the Governor is not surprised that Georgia is still in the running.

“What we expected because we were rated so highly in the first round. We were essentially in the top spot out of all those that came into round two.”

Brantley is confident Georgia will be one of a dozen or fewer states chosen to receive hundreds of millions of dollars in “Race for the Top” money.

“That’s the confidence we’re going in with, and we’re really hopeful we’ll be there at the end.”

Brantley says the Governor and a group of the state’s top educators will travel to Washington D.C. in August to present the state’s final race for the top plan. The U.S. Department of Education will decide which states receive the money in September.
